A picture is worth a thousand words? Well, we’ll find out just what readers reckon a thousand words are worth in April, when Faber & Faber publish the first book for which buyers can decide their own price, Ben Wilson’s fittingly titled What Price Liberty?. The book will be available for download on 27 April.
It’s a purchasing experiment that was first put to the test in 2007 by the astounding, the incredible, the (most probably) death-defying Radiohead, who released their album In Rainbows with no price tag. Fans could pay whatever they wanted, which, from one perspective, was whatever they deemed the album to be worth. Who needs reviewers when you have reader’s purse strings to measure a book’s cultural value?
